It seems like every day, a new story about a cybersecurity threat or breach makes its way into the mainstream media. And as we continue to conduct business and handle personal matters online, cybersecurity becomes an increasingly more important field.
That’s why we were so excited when a group of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) students from Dayspring Academy in Greenbrier, Tennessee, wanted to join us for a Smashville Cybersecurity Talks event.
“Dayspring Academy contacted us about attending this event, and we were more than happy to accommodate them,” says Josh Davis, Vice President of Marketing at InfoSystems. “Our goal with this series of talks was to make business leaders aware of security breaches that are impacting so many communities. To hear that high school students were interested — and that they’d been introduced to many of these concepts already — was very encouraging.”
A Field Experience — on Ice
More than 20 students attended the November 19 event featuring IBM QRadar, a software for security information and event management (SIEM) that enables companies to create a single management interface to detect and prioritize security threats across an enterprise.
As with the other Smashville events, the student attendees watched the Predators’ morning skate time before learning more about cybersecurity in a conference room at Bridgestone Arena.
Dayspring Academy fosters student academic growth through science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math, or STEAM. Because of the school’s commitment to technology-focused curriculum, all high school students participate in a nationally acclaimed engineering program. At the Smashville talk, Dayspring students were engaged and interested in the concepts presented.
“Dayspring Academy students heightened their level of connectivity in the cybersecurity field through the energized discourse of speakers at the presentation in Nashville,” says Kellye Mayhew, technology coordinator at Dayspring Academy. “We appreciate InfoSystems providing the perfect field experience for these tech career-oriented young people.”
Not only will the information shared benefit students who do choose to pursue careers in the information technology space, but it will also provide a deeper understanding of the importance of cybersecurity and protecting one’s information online.
“Phishing and ransomware aren’t just aimed at businesses but at the general population — cybersecurity affects families and homes and anyone connected to the internet,” Davis says. “The greater awareness you have of security threats, the more you can do to protect your network, whether family or business. As technology continues to become more and more prevalent, so will the need for cybersecurity experts. We are proud to be able to help educate the next generation of leaders in the field.”
